Following the adoption of a significant resolution at the UN Human Rights Council—which not only renewed but also expanded the mandate of the Fact-Finding Mission on Iran, originally established in November 2022 during nationwide protests—Sara Hashash, Amnesty International’s Deputy Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, responded.

She said, “The renewal of both the Special Rapporteur’s mandate on the human rights situation in Iran and the broadened scope of the Fact-Finding Mission marks a vital and long-overdue response to the ongoing calls for accountability from survivors, the families of victims, and human rights activists both within Iran and abroad.”

4th Feb 2025 - Amnesty International has issued an 'Urgent Action' to stop the imminent execution of two Iranian political prisoners, Behrouz Ehsani, 69, and Mehdi Hassani, 48, who were sentenced to death after a grossly unfair trial.

The Supreme Court of Iran’s regime recently rejected their request for a judicial review, paving the way for their execution at Ghezel Hesar Prison in Alborz province. Their case has drawn widespread condemnation due to allegations of torture, forced confessions, and violations of due process.

On Wednesday, 16 April 2025, Heydatollah Farzadi, the head of Evin Prison, announced that five political prisoners are to be transferred to Qezel-Hesar Prison by the end of the day.

The prisoners — Vahid Bani Amerian, Akbar (Shahrokh) Daneshvarkar, Babak Alipour, SeyedPouya Ghobadi, Mohammad Taghavi — have all been sentenced to death. The transfer order was issued by Judge Iman Afshari of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, which sentenced the five men in December 2024.

They were convicted on charges of the main  opposition group that the Iranian authorities consider hostile to the regime.

In their statement, 250 cross-party signatories denounce the regime’s systematic use of the death penalty as a means to target dissidents and detained demonstrators. They emphasise that these executions are politically motivated, intended to suppress dissent and deter future uprisings through fear and intimidation. The signatories draw attention to the regime’s longstanding record of crimes against humanity, ranging from past massacres to ongoing atrocities, as documented by UN mandate holders and human rights experts.

20th April 2025 - The Iranian authorities are preparing to inflict the cruel and irreversible punishment of finger amputation against three prisoners as early as 11 April, following their torture-tainted convictions in unfair trials, Amnesty International warned. The organization is calling on the international community to urgently press the Iranian authorities to end this spectacle of brutality. All Iranian officials responsible for ordering and/or carrying out these acts of torture must be criminally investigated and prosecuted. 

11th January 2025 - A group of Political Prisoners has issued an open letter urging international organizations and institutions to use their full capacity to take effective action to halt the execution of three political prisoners: Pakhshan Azizi, Mehdi Hassani, and Behrouz Ehsani, currently held in Evin Prison in Tehran. This came after the Iranian regime's Supreme Court upheld the death sentences for these 3 individuals.
