8th Jan 2021 - The regime's supreme leader, Khamenei, announced in a tweet that he will be banning all imports of coronavirus vaccines from the UK, US and France, to Iran. Soon after posting this tweet, Twitter removed it. The baseless allegations made by Khamenei include, the vaccine being 'unreliable' and suggesting that these countries intend to infect the Iranian people with contaminated vaccines. The reality is that Khamenei has been giving mixed messages regarding the coronavirus vaccines from the start.
Back in March 2020, Doctors Without Borders tried to set up a health clinic in Iran to help Covid patients, but the regime promptly kicked them out of the country. More recently, the Red Cresent attempted to send 150,000 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine from America and the UK which, again, the regime categorically refused. At the same time, the regime tells the Iranian people that they are unable to gain access to funds necessary to buy vaccines due to sanctions, even though there is a clear exception made for food and medicine.
Amnesty International has called the regime's actions a part of 'decades-long contempt for human rights, including the right to life and health' and they have said that it is 'reckless' that Khamenei is 'toying' with the people's lives by not giving them access to life-saving vaccines which have already been 'proven to be safe.'
