Amnesty International has expressed outrage over the execution of a prisoner, 22 years of age on 30th January 2018, who was under the age of 18 at the time of his alleged crime. Ali Kazemi had been imprisoned since 2011 following his charges.
Bushehr prison officials had informed Ali's family of his planned execution one day before and were told to go and visit him that same evening for one last time. Upon arrival, they were told that the execution had been halted however as they soon found out, Ali was indeed executed the next day as planned.Though he was in contact with a lawyer, he was not made aware of his scheduled execution.
The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child is unequivocal in its prohibition to execute minors; children who committed a crime under the age of 18 .Between 2005 and 2018, Amnesty recorded the execution of 87 people convicted by the courts in Iran for crimes that occurred when they were under the age of 18.
